September, 2006
I want to start this letter by saying thank you to all of you who helped make the 10th anniversary of my ordination a very special event. I was truly surprised! I know how much work it must have taken to put all the pieces in order, and to keep it a secret! My family and I truly appreciate the wonderful gift you gave us. It will be put to good use! Thanks to the Church Council, Fellowship Committee, and all who put in time and effort.
I also want to say a more general thank you to all of the people at Messiah Lutheran Church. You have all been a blessing to my family and to me. I have no doubt that God was at work when we were led to this place. We have gotten to know some truly wonderful and faithful people here.
As I look back on 10 years of ministry, I realize how much I have learned in such a relatively short period of time. I have been grateful for the challenges, and even the failures, because I have learned a lot from them. I think the key to this whole pastoral ministry “thing” is to keep learning, and growing. God isn’t finished with me yet!
What strikes me is that God isn’t finished with Messiah yet either. We have so many opportunities ahead of us. We have a chance to grow together, and a chance to learn together. We will share laughter and we will share tears. We will face daunting challenges, and at times we will fail. But, we will learn and grow from all of it.
Take a look at this September Grace Note. There are many opportunities offered here for you to learn and grow. We have Bible studies to be a part of, committees to join, activities to share, Sunday School to celebrate. There is so much that none of us has an excuse not to be a part of something! I would encourage you all to find a good fit and make a commitment. This congregation needs you. Christ needs you. There is work to be done.
As I look toward my next 10 years of ministry, I do so with great hope. Of course we don’t know what the future will bring, but we know that Christ will be there. We know that there will be plenty of chances to grow together as Christ’s community. We know that God will provide us with what we need to be faithful, and to do the work of the Kingdom.
Start this month. Get active! Stretch yourself a bit! Together, let’s find what God has in store for us in the ministry we all share.
In Christ’s Name,
Pastor Fox

COMMITTEE/MINISTRY PLANNING DAY! It’s time to look ahead and begin to
make plans for the coming year of ministry at Messiah! Since that kind of planning involves all of us, everyone is invited
to come together on Sept. 24th,
along with all of Messiah’s
ministry committees, after our 11:00
worship service. Our goals? First, to enable everyone to become more
familiar with the work of each of our ministry committees so we can find the
ones that best match our gifts, skills and interests. And, second, to work on scheduling our meetings and activities
for the coming year.
Immediately after worship, we’ll meet as a group for light refreshments in the fellowship hall. Then we’ll break into groups to discuss our plans for the coming year. We will be done by 1:15.
This will be a great opportunity for us to organize and improve the way we do ministry through our various groups. And it will be a great opportunity for each of us (especially new members) to get plugged into one of our committees. If you’re not familiar with our ministry committees, here’s a head start:
Christian Education is tasked with making sure our members are educated in the faith. They plan and implement all the teaching ministries of the church including Vacation Bible School, Sunday School for adults and children, and other special events
Evangelism works to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to all people. This includes everything from welcoming new visitors to helping the congregation reach out to the surrounding community. Some recent examples are the Lyndhurst Home Days Parade, the Hillcrest Band concert, and the development of church brochures.
Fellowship plans social activities for the congregation. Recent examples include the Captain’s baseball game, the potluck for Pastor Fox’s ordination anniversary, and our Seder dinner. Many more events are being planned.
Finance works on annual budgeting and financial issues for the church. An important task!
Property folks maintain the church property. They plan and implement repairs and improvements. Anytime the church property needs a bit of “TLC,” the property committee is there!
Social Ministry works to reach those in need in our community and beyond. They work closely with area congregations to deliver food, clothing, and necessities to people who need them. When they see a need in the community, they try their best to fill it!
Stewardship is charged with teaching members of the congregation the Christian need to share the gifts they have been given. They plan and implement yearly stewardship drives to fund the mission, ministry, outreach, and day-to-day needs of Messiah.
Youth Committee members make sure our high school age youth are given opportunities to grow and learn in a safe Christian environment. They plan activities such as overnights, whitewater rafting, and our Easter breakfast with the youth themselves.
Where do you think God may be calling you to be an active part of the Body of Christ that is Messiah? Join us Sept. 24th to learn more and, perhaps, to become a part of one of our ministry committees!

THE LUTHERAN COURSE IS
COMING!
On Wednesday, Oct.4th
at 6:30 pm, Pastor Fox will lead us in a new study called “The Lutheran Course.” Based on The Lutheran
Handbook, the Lutheran
Course takes you through the fundamentals of Lutheranism in 14 sessions. There
will be large and small group sessions as well as DVD presentations by
top-notch Lutheran theologians. If
you’re a visitor or new Lutheran and would be interested in learning more about
what makes us tick . . . if you’re an old Lutheran and would like a refresher
course on what is “most certainly true” . . . if you have a sense of humor and
a desire to learn and share . . . then The Lutheran Course is for you! The 14 Wednesday sessions
go from Oct. 4 – Jan. 24 (with some time off around the holidays). We will meet from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. to discuss
topics such as: How to Tell the
Difference Between the Law and the Gospel; Five Things You Should Know about
the Lutheran

Reformation;
The Anatomy of a Baptism; How to Receive Communion;, The Three Most
Rebellious
Things Jesus Did; How to Read the Bible; and How to Share Your Faith with
Someone (yes, Lutherans can do this!)
If you’d like to join us, please use the sign up sheet outside the
library. A $14.00 charge per participant
will provide a copy of “The Lutheran Handbook” and accompanying workbook. If you haven’t seen the Lutheran handbook
yet, you are missing something really special. It’s fun, it’s informative, and it’s even a bit irreverent!

A BIG WELCOME TO ALL OF OUR MESSIAH SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND
TEACHERS. Sunday
School classes resume on Sept. 17th
from 9:45-10:45 am and will continue into May 2007. Rally
Day is Sept 10th. Parents,
especially those whose children will be starting Sunday School for the first
time, are asked to meet at the Sunday School office before the parade. This
will give you a few minutes to locate your child’s room, meet his/her teacher
and answer any questions you may have.
Our Intermediate and Jr High
Classes will utilize the mailboxes located outside of the conference room. Each
family will have a box assigned to them. The students will keep their journals
there and bring them to class each Sunday. Important information and reminders
will be distributed in boxes. Please empty your children’s mailbox weekly. A
calendar of scheduled events including Worship Participation, singing, etc.,
will be provided.
Sunday School offering envelopes
have been donated by Karyn Schmidt. Children will be
provided with an envelope for each Sunday of the Sunday School year. Please utilize
them for you child’s offering each week.
Please continue to support our Kids Helping Kids outreach projects.
Our current project, collecting and shipping items for children in Iraq, will
close at the end of September.
The next teacher meeting is
scheduled for Oct. 8th after
the 11:00 service. Bring a lunch. We hope to have another guest speaker and
want to thank you Shirley Wozniak for her presentation on Autism during our last
meeting.
Also, thanks in advance to all
of our wonderful teachers and parents for sharing their time and talents to
make Messiah Lutheran Sunday School the best it has ever been!
Cheryl Moser
Sunday School Superintendent
MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The children will present their
Christmas Program on Sunday, Dec. 10th
at 10 am in the Sanctuary. The 20-minute program will be followed
with refreshments in the library. Rehearsal
for this event will be on Saturday, Dec.
9th from 10 am to 12 pm at the church.
NEW ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS: “How do Lutherans Interpret the Bible?”
This question is at the heart of modern controversies among Christians. How we interpret the Bible is key to how we understand our faith. The new Adult Sunday School class will be dealing with this topic. We will look at questions such as “Do we need to defend the Bible? Where does the Bible come from?” and “How does it shape our morality?” The classes are based on a video series by Dr. Mark Allen Powell, Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Dr. Powell was Pastor Fox’s advisor and favorite professor at seminary. He has a clear, common sense way of looking at the Bible that everyone will benefit from hearing.
Pastor Fox leads the discussion in the conference room each Sunday morning at 9:45am beginning on Sept. 17th. All are welcome to attend. If you want to learn more about your faith and your Bible, this is a great way to do it!
THE CHILDREN OF
MESSIAH NEED YOUR HELP! We are seeking additional Sunday School
teachers, helpers and substitutes for the upcoming school year. Share
your love of the Lord while getting to know the children of Messiah – they are
terrific! See Sue Joliat or Amy Kovach for more information.

at noon. Please bring a sack lunch. Dessert will be provided by
hostess Chris Nuss. Pastor Fox will lead a Bible study. We
will be working on Christmas gifts for the Sunday School children. All
are welcome to join us.
CATECHISM BEGINS! That’s right; it’s time once again for 7th and 8th graders to gather on Sunday nights to discuss the wonders of Luther’s Small Catechism with Pastor Fox! We will meet at 7:00 on Sunday evenings in the Church Library. Our first class will be held on Sept. 24th. Parents are encouraged to attend this session. We will talk about the year ahead, pass out schedules, and give you a taste of what we will be doing in class this year. Catechism classes include discussion of the 10 Commandments, the Apostle’s Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Bible, the Church, and much, much more. It is a two year course of study culminating in Confirmation for 8th graders. If you have a child in the 7th grade who would like to be a part of this important learning experience, please notify Pastor Fox. See you on the 24th!

KIDS HELPING
KIDS WILL SEND ANOTHER SHIPMENT TO CHILDREN IN IRAQ AT THE END OF
SEPTEMBER! Do you ever wonder if
money or items you donate to one cause or another ever reach their intended
recipients? And, if so, do they really
make a difference? Herb Joliat, a Civil Affairs Officer stationed near
Baghdad, says the six boxes of toys, candy, school supplies, and simple medical
supplies have truly aided in the work he does with local government chiefs to
help the Iraqis get "back on their feet." His work in local
communities leaves him very concerned about the welfare of the children he sees
daily. Herb tells us that the items received are much appreciated
and that he knows that "it saves lives because we don't
get targeted like the other patrols." Let’s remember that, like Abraham, we, too, are blessed to be a
blessing. Here is a wonderful
opportunity to be a blessing to Herb and the people who serve with him as well
as to the children of Iraq. You
can make a difference.
Questions, comments and
suggestions may be directed to Lisa Broerman or Sue
Joliat. We continue to accept the following
items to send to school children in Iraq: aspirin, Bandaids, Neosporin cream, small
toys, rubber balls, hard candy, Jolly Ranchers, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. Monetary donations are also welcome to help defray
shipping costs. Please continue to
bring items to church and place them in the large basket by the Sunday School
Office.
And, back to the question as to whether donations
of money or items you make truly make a difference to anyone, take a look at
the picture Herb sent us from Baghdad!

TO WOMEN OF MESSIAH who
would like to grow in faith and fellowship:
You are cordially
invited to experience
a new small group for women on Thursday evenings! We don’t know exactly how often we’ll meet or even what we’ll do
when we meet – that will be left for the group to decide. We can tell you that there are no
“experts” among us! We hope to learn
together – perhaps through prepared Bible studies or Christian books. And we know that we will initially meet at Toni
Laurenson’s home near Richmond Mall on Thursday, Sept. 14th (note new date!) at 7:00. We can also tell you that this will be a
relaxed and informal group where “no experience” is necessary! The only requisite is that you have an open
mind, an open heart, and that you would enjoy gathering with other women who want
to grow in faith and friendship. Please
RSVP to let us know you plan to join us and we will provide directions!
Questions? Call Toni at 216 381-3199 or
email Tonilaurenson@adelphia.net.
AMONG OUR MEMBERS
w We had to say goodbye to Rod, Kathy, Ella and Collen Miller. Rod has taken a new position as a high school band director in Port Clinton.
w Congratulations to Penny Rieck who opens a new chapter in her life as she begins training as a flight attendant for Mesa Airlines. Penny will probably be stationed in either Chicago or Washington D.C.
w
While we are deeply saddened to lose such valuable
members, we trust
that God will bless Penny and the Millers in their new locations and will guide
them to a new church home.
w We have also experienced great joy recently as God has blessed us with four new members through baptism.
w
Natalie Marie Brown, born May 7,
2006, daughter of Ryan and Meredith
Brown, was baptized on July 23. Her sponsor was Linda Coy.
w
Vincent Adam Cannata, born May 2,
2006, son of Vince and Christina
Cannata, was baptized on August 13. His sponsors were Megan
Carey and
Dr. John O'Block.
w
Lauren Charlotte Haverstick, born
May 15, 2006, daughter of Joseph and
Rebecca Haverstick, was baptized on August 20. Her sponsors were Brian
Mocny and Amy Haverstick. Joseph and Rebecca were also
received as
members of Messiah through transfer.
w
Riley Quinn Bruger Jones, born July 4, 2004, daughter of Christine
Bruger and
Brian Jones, was baptized on August 27. Her sponsors were Jennifer
Lenox and Brian Lenox.
w
It is a true blessing for Messiah to welcome all these
new children into
the family of God.
w
Pastor Mohr paid a surprise visit to
the office in August and shared the news that he will be married on Nov. 12th. His fiancée is Marilyn Bloom, a friend
of Pastor Mohr and his deceased wife, Carole.
Pastor Mohr recently retired from his
churches in Toledo. We extend our congratulations to him and wish him much
happiness and God's blessings
upon his marriage. A newspaper clipping
announcing his engagement is
posted on the bulletin board in the reception area.
w
Lisa Broerman has accepted a
position at Akron Children's Hospital where
she will be the social worker for Pediatric Endocrinology and
Gastroenterology. She will be
relocating to the Stow/Cuyahoga Falls
area. She would like to thank everyone
for their prayers and kind
thoughts. We will miss you Lisa!
HAVE YOU SHARED YOUR FAVORITE GRACES AND BEDTIME PRAYERS YET? There is still time to add your family’s special table graces – everyday or holiday – to those of other Messiah members and friends. And don’t forget we’d love to know any story or fond memory associated with that grace, too! What about a children’s bedtime prayer? We’d love to have that as well. Whether you prayed these prayers as a child – or are using them today with your little ones – or – or your children are grown with children of their own, please share them with us. We’re not certain how long we’ll be collecting these precious prayers and memories so we’d love to hear from you soon. Once we have collected enough prayers and memories to fill a “home made” book, we will create one for our faith family to share with each other and their families. To contribute or to ask questions, please contact Joanie McTernan (440 449-4019.)
KOINONIA!
(Coin-o-NEE-uh):
communion, association, partnership,
fellowship. Last fall we formed our first Koinonia Groups at
Messiah. Typically, these are groups of
six to ten people (singles and couples) that meet periodically (frequency is up
to the individual group). The way they
spend their time together is also determined by the group and might include
Bible study, devotional time, and/or just relaxed conversation. Whatever the size or format, the end result is
usually growth in faith and fellowship!
Two groups got started last September and continued to meet throughout
the year. Now it is time to come
together to share experiences, regroup and expand this wonderful ministry! If you didn’t get an opportunity to
participate last year, now is your chance to become part of a small group. Plan to come to the fellowship hall on
Sunday, Oct. 8th at
6:00 pm. We’ll talk about Koinonia, share ideas, and then you can decide if you want to be part of a group for the coming year. Can’t make it but don’t want to miss the opportunity become part of a group? Please email office@messiahlyndhurst.org or call (440) 442-6941 to let us know! We’ll make certain that you are part of the faith, fun and fellowship in the year ahead.
DEAR FAMILY IN CHRIST,
Kevin
and I want to thank you all for your prayers, cards, and thoughtfulness
during his mother’s illness and death. Each card and kind word touches us
deeply and softens our grief. We are so blessed to be members of such a
caring family. Lisa Halberg
WOULD YOU
LIKE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE FINANCIAL REPORT THAT COMES WITH THE GRACE NOTE
EACH MONTH? Several
members of the congregation have asked questions about the finances and the
financial report of the Church - this is an explanation of what is behind the
numbers. The first and most important
number is at the bottom of the third column, ($8,166). (Negative
numbers are indicated in parentheses.) This says that as of the end of
July, the Church has spent $8,166 more dollars than has been contributed. From left to right the columns are as
follows:
·
2006
Budget:
This is the budget the congregation voted last November. The income (Pledges)
is what we said we would give this year. The expenses are what it cost to run
the church. For example, the gas bill for the Church is $1,050 per month which
is included under the Physical Plant category.
·
This
Month:
This is the income and expenses for July.
·
YTD: This is the income and
expenses from January1, 2006 to July 31, 2006.
·
Forecast: This is the most
difficult column. It is the Treasurer’s best guess as to what will be given
(income) and what will be spent for the remainder of the year. It is a guess.
If we don’t continue giving what we pledged, if we have expenses that were not
foreseen, this would change. The number in the far right bottom is then my
guess as to where the church will end the year - with a $965 deficit. Chris Butler
WE WANT TO MAKE CERTAIN WE CELEBRATE EVERYONE’S BIRTHDAY!! Please let us know if your birthday did not appear on the appropriate month’s list on the back cover of a Grace Note!! Simply call or email Peg at the church office to let her know. We want to celebrate everyone’s special day with them!

IF IT HURTS, DON'T DO IT!
WELLNESS NOTE: Attention-deficit
/hyperactivity disorder
ADHD is a condition of the brain that makes it difficult for people to concentrate. The following are quick answers to some common questions.
Q.
What causes ADHD?
A. There isn’t just one cause. Research shows that ADHD is a medical condition
caused by small changes in how the brain works. It seems to be related to two chemicals in your brain called dopamine and norepinephrine. These chemicals help send messages between nerve cells in the brain—especially those areas of the brain that control attention and activity level. ADHD must often runs in families. In a few people with ADHD, being born prematurely or being exposed to alcohol during the pregnancy can contribute to ADHD. Immunizations and eating too much sugar do NOT cause ADHD. And there isn’t enough evidence that shows allergies and food additives cause ADHD.
Q.
How can you tell if someone has ADHD?
A. You can’t tell if someone has ADHD just by looks. People with ADHD do not look
any different, but how they act may make them stand out from the crowd. Some people with ADHD are very hyperactive (they move around a lot and are not able to sit still) and have behavior problems that are obvious to everyone. Other people with ADHD are quiet and more laid back on the outside, but on the inside struggle with schoolwork and other tasks. They are distracted by people and things around them when they try to study; they may have trouble organizing schoolwork or forget to turn in assignments.
Q.
Can ADHD cause someone to act up or
get in trouble?
A. Having ADHD can cause you to struggle in school or have problems controlling
your behavior. Some people may say or think that your struggles and problems are because you are bad, lazy, or not smart. But they are WRONG. It’s important that you get help so your impulses don’t get you into serious trouble.
Q.
Don’t little kids who have ADHD outgrow it
by the time they are teens? (continued)
A. Often kids with the hyperactive kind of ADHD get less hyperactive as they get
Into their teens, but usually they still have a lot of difficulty paying attention, remembering what they have read and getting their work done. They may or may not have other behavior problems. Some kids with ADHD have never been hyperactive at all, but usually their attention problems also continue into their teens.
Q.
If I have trouble with homework or tests, do
I have ADHD?
A. There could be many reasons why a student struggles with homework and tests.
ADHD could be one reason. It may not be, but your pediatrician is the best person to say for sure. Kids with ADHD often say it’s hard to concentrate, focus on a task (for example, schoolwork, chores, or a job), manage their time, and finish tasks. This could explain why they may have trouble with schoolwork and tests. There are many people willing to help you. You need to find the approach that works best for you.
Q.
Does having ADHD mean a person is not very
smart?
A. ABSOLUTELY NOT! People who have trouble paying attention may have problems
in school, but that doesn’t mean they’re not smart. In fact, some people with ADHD
are very smart, but may not be able to reach their potential in school until they get
treatment. ADHD is a common problem. Teens with ADHD have the potential to
do well in school and live a normal life with the right treatment.
Q.
Is it just a guy thing?
A. ADHD is more common in guys than girls. About 3 times more guys than girls are
diagnosed with ADHD. But more girls are being identified with ADHD.
Q.
What do I do if I think I have ADHD?
A. Don’t be afraid to talk with your parents or other adults that you trust. TOGETHER
you can meet with your pediatrician and find out if you really have ADHD. If you do, your pediatrician will help you learn how to live with ADHD and find ways to deal with your condition.

have a Fibrocise class outside the Conference Room in September: Monday,
Wednesday and Friday – 8:00-9:00 a.m.; Tuesday and Thursday – 11:00-12:00
Noon. It was moved by Elise Hassink, seconded by Carol
Lindeman to allow Sue to hold classes during the month of September
outside the Conference Room at a charge to her of $20 per day. Motion
passed.
Courtyard: The deck construction
is completed and plantings installed. The area will be graded
and grass will be planted in September. John complimented and thanked all
who worked on this project. The Worship Committee needs to plan the
dedication for late Spring, 2007.
Church Calendar: Pastor
Fox is requesting that each committee meet and make plans for the
coming year – including the number of meetings and their dates so that the
church calendar can be kept up to date and conflicts avoided. It
was moved by Chris Butler and seconded that all committee council
